🌱#aarg6i will be our first @nasa partnered #research mission #analog investigating #spirulina growth in Martian simulant. This research is in collaboration with the APUS Spirulina Group, who was recently awarded a large @nasawvspacegrant under @epscor to investigate the use of algae as a bio-fertilizer for future #lunar and #Martian settlements.

The PIRATE crew resurfaced after a quick 24-hour stay in the Jules Undersea Lodge. It was short, but the crew took full advantage of time in the habitat to conduct their research and enjoy this unique experience.

On January 3rd Scott Van Hoy (Commander), Dr. Kristin Drexler (Faculty Advisor), Olivia Turner (Mission Specialist), and Luis Gonzalez (Mission Specialist) entered the habitat, 20 ft below the surface of the lagoon, at 1330 EST. Over the next 24 hours, they held live streams for APUS groups, recorded outreach videos, collected data for their projects, and conducted a night dive to fulfill the PADI Aquanaut specialty certification requirement. They enjoyed views of marine life right outside their window and experienced bioluminescence up close during their night dive.

On January 4th, 24 hours later, they egressed the habitat and returned to the surface. They spent the afternoon wrapping up projects, collecting more data, etc., and met up with the University of North Dakota crew for dinner that night, who were preparing for their ingress into the undersea lodge the next day.

Martian storms came through today, canceling more EVAs. ⛈️The crew took advantage of the extra downtime to make delicious food, and enjoy some movies playing in the background, including Nightmare on Elm Street Part 3, and Monty Python and the Holy Grail.🍿They also enjoyed another Mario Kart session. 🎮

CO Turner is still not seeing any growth in her Martian regolith, but the Lunar and Earth greens continue to thrive. 🌿 MS Cecil is excited about the growth in her Martian soil and will soon check to see if their roots made it to the Martian soil or if they sprouted in the topsoil layer. 🌱🌱MS DeJan has removed his tank from the green hab to ensure that other plants weren’t skewing any data. MS Gonzalez hasn’t been able to measure any EVA performance the past two days, but he does have enough baseline data to build a performance foundation for the crew. 📈
